Storm Surge Destroys Merchandise

Quantified and traced merchandise losses sustained in a warehouse following storm surge from Superstorm Sandy. The claim was based on a physical inventory count conducted 10 months prior to the incident. Destroyed goods were not properly accounted for by the insurer’s salvor during clean-up, leaving no verification of actual losses. Analysis of accounting documents and shipping protocols uncovered during the investigation demonstrated the true quantity and value of merchandise destroyed was less than originally claimed.

Deduction for Obsolescence

A furniture distributor in Saudi Arabia claimed loss of stock following a fire at its warehouse, which destroyed inventory. Review included analysis of the claimant's inventory systems and controls, audit of documents supporting the cost of damaged inventory and analysis of expected sales. Evaluated if all inventory would have been sold 'but for' the incident or whether some product was obsolete. The claim settled based on our calculation, which included a deduction for obsolescence.

SIPC Investigation

Assisted the Trustee appointed by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) with investigation of a $25 million misappropriation of customer money market funds from a regional brokerage firm. The investigative team included the SEC, US Attorney’s Office and the FBI. Investigative procedures included the analyses of numerous bank accounts to determine how the theft was perpetrated and where the money went. The results of the investigation have been used in criminal and civil proceedings.
