An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit central northern Italy at 7.10pm local-time on 26 October 2016. A second devastating quake, measuring 6.1, followed two hours later.

Having spent some time living in Italy, my initial reaction to hearing such terrible news was the same as everyone else: shock and concern for friends, family and others affected by the quake. You brace yourself for loss of human life, for those young and old caught up in the tragedy.

In my job, however, I have to consider the financial loss this sort of catastrophe has on commercial enterprises. As a forensic accountant, I specialise in dealing with commercial business interruption losses.
